Language
Course Description: Basic alphabet sounds and blending resulting in reading fluency.
Objective: The learner will demonstrate a proficiency in phonemic awareness resulting in decoding/reading fluency, and will have an expanded vocabulary.

Math
Course Description: Basic introduction of addition / subtraction / number concepts.
Objective: The learner will demonstrate mathematical ability in number order and formation, addition and subtraction, place and grouping, linear measurement, and geometric shapes.
Textbooks: Arithmetic 1 (Abeka Books, publisher)
Time Allotment: 45 minutes per day; 5 days a week

First Quarter
Calendar, counting and writing to 100, place values 1’s and 10’s, addition and subtraction 1-6 math facts, solving word problems, counting 1 and 10, beginning geometry, graphs, counting by 5's, 1, 5 and 10 cents
Second Quarter
Calendar, counting and writing to 200, place value- 1’s, 10’s, 100’s, addition and subtraction 1-9 math facts, solving word problems, counting money 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, beginning geometry, graphs, linear measurement, clocks, fractions
Third Quarter
Calendar, counting to 1,000, additional and subtraction 1-12 math facts, solving word problems, counting money 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, and $1, beginning geometry, graphs, linear measurement, clocks, fractions, temperature
Fourth Quarter
Calendar, counting Roman #’s and tally marks, < and >, random number order, solving word problems with missing numbers, counting random coins, beginning geometry, graphs, comparing fractions, beginning multiplication

Summative assessments with weekly test on key concepts - oral and written

Science
Course Description: Unit studies cover various scientific topics from physical science, earth science, and life science
Objective: The learner will demonstrate a knowledge of main elements of each unit through oral recitation and project completion.
Textbooks: Discovering God's World - ABeka, Science - BJU; Covering NC state standards - Studies Weekly - Studies Weekly, Inc.
Time Allotment: 30 minutes each for 2 days a week
Course Content
First Quarter
Apples, seasons, plants, importance and needs, farm animals and basic needs, spiders and characteristics
Second Quarter
Fall leaves, Planets in the Solar System, constellations, moon phases, God's creation of the earth and our universe, camels in the habitats and soil types
Third Quarter
Polar habitats - focus on penguins and their needs, weather and temperature, health and body systmes, safety, and stranger danger
Fourth Quarter
Insects and butterflies, earth materials, forces in motion, and review of all skills earned
Areas to Be Evaluated: Formative assessments daily - question and answer/boys vs girls/think-pair-share. Summative assessments - apple booklet, Charlotte's web diorama, planet position chart, heart chart, butterfly poster, participation in science experiments. Formative assessments - oral evaluations, think-pair-share, and Q&A.
Social Studies/History
Course Description: Unit studies following seasons and holidays during the school year.
Objective: The learner will demonstrate knowledge of main elements of each unit through oral recitation and project completion.

Time Allotment: 15-30 minutes per day (frequently integrated with Science)
Course Content
First Quarter
National holidays, change in neighborhoods / communities, rules / authority figures in communities, history of Europe and two main cultures from India and Central America A.D. 33 to 476
Second Quarter
National holidays, geography / maps, various cultures and celebration of holidays, history of the Dark Ages in Europe, the Medievil Period, great scholars of the Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire and the Japanese Civilization; spread of Christianity, Muslims, and Buddhism.
Third Quarter
National holidays, money / goods & services, history from 874 to 1192, covering continued spread of Christianity, Crusades, dedicated believers and persecution, remote areas of the world such as Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, different cultures and legendary names like Robin Hood and Macbeth.
Fourth Quarter
National holidays, Fairy Tales and Folklore, history from 1210 to 1456, from Saints to reformers of the early church, philosophers and scientists, poets of the middle ages, wonders of China, fall of the Byzantine Empire and the close of the Middle Ages.
Areas to Be Evaluated: Formative assessments daily - question and answer/boys vs girls/think-pair-share. Summative assessments with end of unit test on key concepts - oral and written on SS and US history only. History project completion of card books
Physical Education
Objective: Students will develop competent motor skills, behavioral strategies to demonstrate responsibility, respect of self and others, and understand the importance of achieving and maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 admonishes us to remember that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Understand the importance of achieving and maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
